Abstract

Objective: To identify the risk factors associated to Plasmodium vivax malaria in a rural population of the northern coast of Peru (Laredo, Trujillo), between March to October 2004. Material and methods: A questionnaire was applied to malaria cases and its controls respective; the cases were identified by the presence of clinical manifestation and positive microscopic exam to the parasite, and the controls were people that didn’t have the illness, paired by age, sex and town with regard to the case. OR and 95% confidence interval (CI95) was calculated by logistic regression. Results: Were included 101 pairs of case and controls. Were identified as risk factors the family antecedent of malaria in the last year (OR: 4,62, CI95: 1,90 - 11,26), the presence of canal to 100 meters or less than housing (OR: 4,61;CI95: 2,15 - 9,89) or the artesian well (OR: 10,93, CI95: 3,45 - 34,.58). Conclusions: The familiar antecedents and the nearness of the housing to potential breeding places are risk factors for the development Plasmodium vivax malaria in the rural zone of Laredo.
