This study aimed to identify SARS-CoV-2 coinfections with other viruses in patients with moderate to severe cases of COVID-19. A total of 98 patients from Lima, San Martín, and Loreto were recruited through convenience sampling. Nasopharyngeal swabs, blood samples, and urine samples were collected from these patients. Serological and molecular tests were used to analyze these samples and detect HTLV, HIV, hepatitis B, dengue, chikungunya, zika, and a panel of respiratory viruses (influenza A and B, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, metapneumovirus, and adenovirus). The results revealed two cases of coinfection (2/98; 2%): one involving SARS-CoV-2 and rhinovirus, and the other involving SARS-CoV-2 and HTLV-2. Both patients presented with pneumonia associated with SARS-CoV-2 but had a favorable outcome. The study concluded that the frequency of viral coinfection in patients with moderate and severe cases of COVID-19 from health facilities on the coast and in the jungle of Peru was low.
